The AARP Public Policy Institute and the United Hospital Fund recently conducted a national online survey of family caregivers to collect information on which medical/nursing tasks family caregivers perform. Results showed staggering statistics such as — 78% of family caregivers were managing medications and administering intravenous fluids and injections.

Results show that family caregivers often lack proper training and support, which means that the quality of care provided is ultimately lessened.

Studies like this will require accrediting agencies to assess the knowledge and requirements necessary for those who aim to meet family caregiver standards.
