Alzheimer’s & Medicare Spending To Boom Over Next 25 Years

Posted on Thursday, July 23, 2015 9:12 AM

According to an analysis from the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 28 million baby boomers will develop Alzheimer’s disease over the next 25 years, consuming nearly 25% of Medicare spending. As more baby boomers develop the disease, researchers expect more severe forms to develop, leading to greater Medicare costs. By 2020, caring for those individuals will cost approximately $12 billion, and about 2.1% of total Medicare spending. By 2040, projected Medicare costs will have increased to $328 billion, consuming 24.2% of total Medicare spending. The Alzheimer’s Association says that they are seeking more funding for research due to the report’s findings. Recent research states a new treatment could delay the onset of Alzheimer’s by five years, saving about $220 billion within the first five years, and cutting the number of people diagnosed by 42% by 2050.
