CMS Issues Final Rule for Self-Reporting Overpayments

CMS has declared a final rule for the requirements on provider and supplier self-reporting overpayments. Health care providers and suppliers will continue to be accountable for FCA liability, CMPL liability, and prohibition from federal care programs for failure to report and return an overpayment. The requirements of this final rule include the following explanations:

  • The importance of overpayment identification
  • The required look back period for overpayment identification
  • The methods available for reporting and returning identified overpayments to CMS
