A recent report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) showed that the health care sector added 49,000 jobs in March 2019. This job growth in March is the second largest ever in health care. Home health now accounts for nine percent of all health care jobs, behind hospitals (31 percent), nursing and residential care (21 percent), physicians’ offices (16 percent), and other ambulatory care (16 percent). Outpatient care centers account for just six percent of health care jobs. Based on current trends, experts believe home health jobs growth will continue to match or exceed job growth in all other settings of the health care sector.
Spending on the other hand, is growing at a slower rate. Health spending grew 4.1 percent from January 2018 to January 2019, 1.5 percentage points lower than the growth in GDP. After growing steady to 17.9 percent of gross domestic product in 2018, health care’s share of GDP fell to 17.7 percent in January 2019.
