CMS has begun distributing the initial $30 billion in funds from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES) and an estimated $1 billion is earmarked for hospices and palliative care facilities.
“[The amount of funds each health care sector receives] is based on a percentage of the Medicare reimbursement that a provider receives, so we are roughly looking at more than a billion dollars of that $30 billion is going to hospice,” Edo Banach, president and CEO of the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO), told Hospice News. “It’s actually already flowing to providers.”
Providers who received Medicare fee-for-service (FFS) reimbursements in 2019 are eligible for this initial distribution. Within 30 days of receiving the payment, providers must sign a form online confirming receipt of the money and agreeing to the terms of payment. The portal for signing the forms will be open the week of April 13, 2020 and will be accessible via the CMS website.
An additional $70 million in CARES Act funds will be available soon, though it remains unknown how that money will be distributed.
