According to the 2018 Medicare Fee-for-Service Improper Payment Data report, improper payments to home health providers fell 15% and went down close to 3% for hospice providers.
“It is clear home health agencies have figured out what documentation is required to support valid Medicare claims,” says NAHC President William A. Dombi. “While the ‘improper payment’ rate is down dramatically, Medicare coverage of home health services has not declined. We believe recent improvements in documentation requirements by CMS that will take effect on January 1 will bring even better results in 2019.”
Home health had an overall improper payment rate of 17.6 percent, down 14.7 percent from the previous year and most of the improper payments were caused by insufficient documentation. Hospice providers had an overall improper payment rate of 11.7 percent, a decline of three percent. Again, over 60 percent of those payments were related to insufficient documentation.
