Key Congressional Leaders Develop Legislation to Address OIG Hospice Survey Concerns

Posted on Monday, February 10, 2020 1:45 PM

The Department of Health & Human Services’ Office of the Inspector General (OIG) released reports last summer targeting the hospice deficiencies which resulted in Congress and other agencies.

“While the House draft has aims similar to those of its Senate counterpart, its current form includes some proposals that have raised the concerns of the hospice community, including:

  • A requirement that routine hospice surveys be conducted every two years (rather than the current three-year cycle;
  • Imposition of civil money penalties; and
  • Creation of a Hospice “Special Focus” Program modeled on the existing Special Focus Facility Program for nursing homes.”

NAHC has been working with other hospice organizations to discuss areas of mutual concern and to outline hospice perspectives.  This is an ongoing discussion and NAHC will disclose more as they discover more issues and projected outcomes.
