Large Percentage of Older Adults Prefer to Remain at Home – Even if Living Alone

Posted on Monday, June 17, 2019 3:30 AM

A recent study conducted by Brookdale Senior Living and OnePoll found that 61% of older adults would prefer to stay in their home, even if it means living alone.  Of the adult children polled, 60% are concerned about their parents’ desire to remain at home and 50% have not discussed paying for senior care with their parent citing its too “stressful”.

“The survey confirms what we see when families walk into our communities every day,” Patchett, Brookdale’s Executive Vice President of Community Relations said in a statement. “Many people wait to talk about senior living until there’s a traumatic event or they need to make a fast decision. Many seniors know they need help, but they don’t want to ask for it because they’re afraid of losing their independence or becoming a burden to their children. Instead, they suffer silently and often in isolation.”
