Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), the ranking member on the Senate Select Committee on Aging, and Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) introduced legislation in the United States Senate and the House of Representatives to protect senior citizens, the disabled, and home health workers from the ravages of the novel coronavirus COVID-19.

The Coronavirus Relief for Seniors and People with Disabilities Act addresses critical health and economic needs for seniors, people with disabilities, front-line workers, and family caregivers. The bill increases funding for nursing home surveys to promote infection control, covers the cost of treatment for low-income seniors and boost the economy, and promotes home and community-based services and protects home health workers.

Specifically, the bill is addressing:

  • protect home health workers and promote home-and-community-based services;
  • ensure seniors and the disabled have access to home-based meals and services;
  • help low-income seniors afford the cost of treatment associated with COVID-19 infection; and
  • increase funding for nursing homes surveys and promote infection control.

“During this unprecedented public health pandemic, it is our responsibility to protect our most vulnerable – seniors, people with disabilities, and the home health workers that support these groups,” added Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), one of the co-sponsors in the House. “Our bill would provide the necessary assistance and resources needed by home health workers who care for seniors and people with disabilities, while also removing the economic burden felt by those with a low or fixed income. I am proud to fight for the millions of American’s whose livelihoods depend on safe and affordable care.”
