“Most homebound seniors have not received medical care at home,” says Nengliang “Aaron” Yao, a researcher at the University of Virginia Department of Public Health Sciences, who led a team that found that “more medical house call programs are needed.”
The researchers looked at Medicare claims from 2011 to 2014 and found that about seven percent of Medicare patients are considered “frail.” Among that seven percent, less than ten percent received home health care and most homebound patients did not receive it between 2011-2014.
Some additional insights from the study showed that:
- Only 2-4% of rural Medicare beneficiaries received home-based medical care
- Men were 24% less likely to receive home care than women
- Asian-Americans were 31% less likely to receive home-based care than whites, while African-Americans were 21% more likely to receive it than whites
- Michigan, Florida and Arizona had the highest instance of home-based care, over 20%
