Members of Congress Are on Recess: Continue Advocacy Efforts for Home Health and Hospice Urged

Posted on Thursday, April 13, 2017 1:36 PM

Members of Congress are currently out for their two-week April recess, and they’re expected to return to Washington on April 25. Home care and hospice advocates are encouraged to get in touch with their Members of Congress back home regarding home care and hospice issues.

In order to stay up-to-date on advocacy efforts, everyone should invite their legislators on a home visit. If you can provide Members of Congress with real-life experiences of a home visit, then that is one of the best ways to let them know that home care and hospice are both extremely beneficial.

For example, U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) stated that a home visit with a home care provider was a transformative experience that made her a champion for home care.

Over the recess, home care and hospice advocates also need to attend legislators’ public appearances.

An important message that needs to be heard by Members of Congress during recess, is to cosponsor bills that are important to home care and hospice. For example, the Home Health Care Planning Improvement Act (S. 445, H.R. 1825), the Preserve Access to Medicare Rural Home Health Services Act (S. 353) and the Rural Access to Hospice Act of 2017 (H.R. 1828).
