The National Association for Home Care & Hospice (NAHC) has joined with like-minded groups in urging Alex Azar, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, to swiftly and effectively implement the Recognize, Assist, Include, Support and Engage Family Caregiver Act that was signed into law earlier this year.
Family caregiving is an issue that has or will touch almost all Americans. These family members are the backbone of home health care, allowing millions of people to be able to be cared for at home. There are approximately 40 million family caregivers providing over $470 billion in care annually. Our country relies on the contributions family caregivers make and should recognize and support them. Family caregivers help with daily tasks such eating, bathing, dressing, transportation, medical/nursing tasks such as managing multiple medications, managing finances, coordinating services, and much more. In doing so, they take on physical, emotional, and financial challenges.
The RAISE Family Caregivers Act will:
- Implement the federal Commission on Long-Term Care’s bipartisan recommendation that Congress require the development of a national strategy to support family caregivers.
- Create an advisory body to bring together relevant federal agencies and others from the private and public sectors to advise and make recommendations.
- Identify specific actions that government, communities, providers, employers, and others can take to recognize and support family caregivers and be updated annually.
