Posted on Sunday, June 9, 2019 11:47 PM

In late 2018, the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) launched an initiative exploring the role states play in improving access to and quality of palliative care for seriously ill patients.

As a part of this initiative, NASHP released: Palliative Care: A Primer for State Policymakers.  In this primer, NASHP names the following state policy “levers” for improving palliative care:

  • Develop standards and definitions within state licensing and regulation;
  • Measure and track the quality of palliative care;
  • Articulate payment and policies within Medicaid;
  • Build workforce capacity; and
  • Educate patients, providers, and the public.
