New Hospice Caregiver Emerging

As the baby boomer generation ages a new type of caregiver is emerging as an extra layer of care, so-called ‘death doulas’.  Doulas are most commonly known for helping women through childbirth, but now they are starting to help the older population at the end of life

Death Doulas can provide services like bathing, medication and helping the family to plan the funeral.  It allows the patient and family to feel secure knowing that they are with someone who is educated and experienced in end of life care.

Currently, Medicare does not cover doulas as a hospice benefit.
