NIH-Funded Census Bureau Report: World’s Aging Population Growing “Dramatically”

A recent U.S. Census Bureau report stated that the older adults are growing at a record high rate. The report was appointed by the NIA, part of the National Institutes of Health. Currently, 8.5 percent of the population is over 65 years old. The older population percentage is estimated to approach 17 percent (1.6 billion) by 2050.

The older population is living longer, however they are not necessarily living healthier lifestyles. The increase in our aging population presents many opportunities and also several public health challenges that we need to prepare for. NIA has partnered with Census to provide the best possible data so that we can better understand the course and implications of population aging.
