As we celebrate our veteran’s this week, we need to make sure that they receive proper care when they come home, especially if they have debilitating health issues in their lives.
Some common illnesses that our veterans face are: post traumatic stress disorder, depression, traumatic brain injury, musculoskeletal injuries, infectious diseases, chemical exposure and noise sensitivity. An estimated 18-22 veterans commit suicide each day, this is not okay.
The Veterans Administration’s long-term care services include: 24/7 nursing and medical care, physical therapy, help with daily tasks, comfort care and help with managing pain and support for caregivers who may need skilled help or a break, so they can work, travel, or run errands.
Earlier this year, President Trump signed the VA Maintaining Internal Systems and Strengthening Integrated Outside Networks (MISSION) Act of 2018 into law. It offers the possibility to increase referral sources for home health agencies instead of limiting veterans to VA facilities. This would allow them to get services in their own community where they have existing relationships with doctors and caregivers. Hopefully, all U.S. veterans who want to take advantage of the services offered by home health care will be able to do so, and the health care system should be arranged to make this as easy as possible.
