Reminder: New Medicare ID Card Transition Begins Today

Posted on Monday, April 2, 2018 1:30 PM

As of Monday, April 2, 2018, the transition period begins to remove social security numbers from Medicare ID cards.  The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015 requires the change from social security numbers on Medicare cards to Medicare Beneficiary Identifier. A new, unique Medicare Number will replace the SSN-based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) on each new Medicare card to help prevent fraud, fight identity theft, and keep taxpayer dollars safe.

With the transition that continues through December 2019, comes some new terminology.

The term “Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN)” will be replaced with the terms “Medicare number” or “Medicare ID.”

This transition starts today and ends December 31, 2019. CMS encourages Medicare providers to help alert your patients by displaying a poster in your office and giving your patients tear-off sheets or fliers – all these resources are available from the CMS educational website for Medicare providers and partners.

Starting in April 2018, people with Medicare will be able to check the status of card mailings in their area on Medicare.gov.
