There is a shortage of workers in the home health industry, and technology is stepping up to fill the void. A new example of this is Rudy, a robot designed to help the elderly and disabled maintain their independence.
Rudy is the size of a ten-year-old child with arms, legs and a screen on his chest. It can give reminders to take medication, play games, tell jokes and offer companionship. The screen also allows doctors and caregivers to check in remotely and call for help.
The social robot market is expected to expand to about $700 million in the United States alone by 2023. With the baby boomer generation aging into retirement (10,000 people turning 65 every single day), creating a “silver tsunami” of demographic change, technology will have to play a critical role in supplementing the efforts of human beings to care for the elderly and disabled.
