The LCAO held a U.S. presidential candidate forum called Seniors Decide 2016 on February 17, 2016. Seniors Decide 2016 is dedicated to issues affecting older Americans. The meeting included Democratic candidate Senator Bernie Sanders, as well as a representative from the campaign of Republican candidate Governor John Kasich. Senator Sanders expressed support for home and community-based care throughout the entire forum, as well as the more affordable options that home care entails. “Home care is a civil rights issue,” and “we should be doing everything that we can to provide resources to keep people in their own homes,” said Senator Sanders. Former Congressman Tom Davis spoke regarding Kasich’s record of putting money towards the use of home care. “If you look at what he did in Ohio is he put part of that money toward long-term care,” Congressman Davis said. Kasich was applauded in his efforts to reverse the bias against aged, infirm and disabled Ohioans into nursing homes and allowing them to remain independent in their own home.
