In the United States, opioids claim approximately 155 lives per day, nearly half of these fatalities are from a prescription drug according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In most states, there are exceptions from prescription limits for the purpose of chronic pain treatment, cancer treatment, and palliative care. State laws hold that exceptions to prescription limits must be documented in the patient’s medical records.
A bill in Florida just passed unanimously through their House and Senate that would allow physicians to bypass checking a database before prescribing opioids to patients in hospice.
The Governor is expected to sign the bill into law.
