According to survey findings released by The Associated Press and independent research organization NORC at Chicago, 77% of older Americans prefer to age in a home setting. However, professional home health aides are not always viewed as the best caregivers. The survey polled nearly 1,700 Americans, 40 years of age and older between February 18 and April 9 of 2016.

Taken from the survey findings, the older Americans preferred care in the following order:
• 70% said they would prefer a family member to provide care
• 51% to 33% of men prefer their spouse to provide care
• 22% said a professional home health aide would be their first choice for caregiver
• 14% to 25% of women are more likely to prefer children as caregivers

Additional findings from the survey include:
• 45% of respondents lost their memory or mental abilities as their top concern of aging
• 43% cited losing their independence and relying on someone else as their top concern
• One-third of respondents said they have no planning for their own long-term care needs
• 64% of those receiving long-term care have two doctors or more with an individualized care plan in place
