Submissions Using Health Insurance Claim Number Will be Rejected Starting January 1, 2020

CMS announced that starting January 1, 2020 any claim submitted with a Health Insurance Claim Number will be rejected.  All claims submitted must use the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI).   This should not be an issue for most providers, as currently 76% of the claims submitted the week of July 6, 2019 used the MBI.

If you do not have an MBI for a patient ask them for their card, if they do not have one give them the “Get Your New Medicare Card” flyer; use your Medicare Administrative Contractor’s look up or check the remittance advice.  If the patient accidentally threw their new card away, ask them to call 1-800-MEDICARE to request a new one.
