Washington Healthcare Update: Vote on BCRA Delayed Until After July 4th Holiday

Posted on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 9:21 PM

After much noise and little deliberation, Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, did not have enough votes to proceed to a motion to vote. He agreed to a delay the motion while the Senate negotiates this bill further. The Republican Majority lost the support of nine key Republican Senate votes in the discussion. They can only afford to lose two Republican votes assuming no Democratic support. While all Senators have not come out to fully reject the Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA), they have all generally stated that it does not meet the needs of their constituents. They have agreed to work with the Majority to improve the bill but cannot vote for it in its current state, as it stands today. There is still a long road to be able to reach a compromise between Conservatives, Moderates and gain any Democratic support even after the 4th of July holiday.
