What You Need To Know About the 2024 ICD-10 Code Set

October 1st will bring some important changes to the ICD-10-CM code set. With 395 additional codes, 13 revised code descriptions, and 25 deleted codes, it will be important for agencies to be aware of the potential impact. One of the bigger impacts that we will see with the upcoming changes will be the coding of Parkinson’s disease. Currently Parkinson’s is captured with diagnosis code G20, however beginning October 1ST 2023, this code will no longer be valid.  This significant change will see the expansion of the codes to differentiate between Parkinson’s with and without dyskinesia and with fluctuations, which include the following:

  • G20.A1 (Parkinson’s disease without dyskinesia, without mention of fluctuations).
  • G20.A2 (Parkinson’s disease without dyskinesia, with fluctuations).
  • G20.B1 (Parkinson’s disease with dyskinesia, without mention of fluctuations).
  • G20.B2 (Parkinson’s disease with dyskinesia, with fluctuations).
  • G20.C (Parkinsonism, unspecified).

Another diagnosis that has been utilized most commonly by our clients is diagnosis code I47.1. This category has been updated to reflect the following code choices:

  • I47.10   Supraventricular tachycardia, unspecified
  • I47.11   Inappropriate sinus tachycardia, so stated
  • I47.19   Other supraventricular tachycardia

With these changes we are also seeing the addition of osteoporosis with current pathological fractures of the pelvis.  This is something that has been lacking in the code set and will help provide greater specificity on the fracture location.

Agencies should be proactive in educating their referral sources on the upcoming changes. This will give providers an opportunity to start proactively documenting greater specificity to help decrease queries once October rolls around.
