While the details of the merger with the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) are still being ironed out, William Dombi, president of the National Association for Home Care & Hospice (NAHC), cleared the air on his future role within the organization.
“The intention is that I’m here through 2024,” Dombi said Monday in a press conference at the 2023 Home Care and Hospice Conference and Expo in Washington, DC.
Whether or not he will become the new CEO of the joint organization remains to be seen. As to what his title may be if he doesn’t take the helm, he said, “I think we decided on president emeritus something like that.”
NAHC and NHPCO plan to come together by 2024, according to the organization’s leaders. At the same time, NAHC has an ongoing lawsuit with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, in which Dombi said he expects to still play an active role.
If litigation is still occurring after the merger has been completed, “There’ll be a name change in the lawsuit, is what I think will be the case,” Dombi simply said.
Dombi noted that the Home Care Association of America is also in the middle of a leadership transition. Jason Lee replaced Vicki Hoak, who led the organization as chief executive officer for about four years, on Oct. 2. While NAHC’s overarching goal is to create a unified voice in the home care sector, Dombi noted that the organization is not looking to take on HCAOA now at the moment.
“We have ongoing conversations about both intensified collaboration, as well as more with multiple organizations. But we have not had any recent discussions with HCAOA intentionally because, in our agreement with NHPCO, we have exclusive conversations going on right now,” Dombi said. “It’s a little bit of a headache and too much to handle to look at another.”
He also noted that this is not NAHC’s first attempt to merge with NHPCO.
“There’s always opportunities and seemingly always some complications, but this is our fourth effort with NHPCO. It has never come close to this far before for a variety of reasons,” Dombi said. “We’ve done everything we can with the NHPCO discussions that there’ll be no one to be considered a winner and no one to be considered a loser. I think we’ve been pretty successful in what we’ve developed so far.”
