According to a new study by researchers at the University of California at San Francisco, at least 2.5 million more long-term care workers will be needed within 15 years in order to keep up with the growth of America’s aging population. Researchers analyzed long-term care usage trends according to residents’ age, gender and race. The researchers then forcecast those trends’ impact on the future based on various scenarios in which certain demographic groups increased or decreased their long-term care usage. None of these sample scenarios dramatically decreased future demand projections for long-term care workers. By 2030, it is estimated that about 20% of Americans will be 65 years or older, and 19 million older adults will require long-term care. The highest growth in long-term careers include counselors, social workers, community and social workers, and home health and personal care aides. Researchers ask policy makers and educators to “redouble efforts to create and sustainably fund programs to recruit, train, and retain, long-term care workers.” Click here to read more.
