Home health nurses need to be a calming influence to each patient they interact with. With that being said, home health nurses are implementing education about the Zika virus dangers to each patient. “Patients hear about Zika every day when they watch TV news, and it frightens them,” says Mary Ann Knee, director of nursing at Trust USA Home Health in Sunrise, Fla.
Almost all Zika cases in the U.S. have been contracted abroad or from a sexual partner that has been exposed to the virus. Currently, areas in Miami are the only locations in the U.S. where transmission of Zika by mosquitoes has been confirmed.
Women of child-bearing age are the biggest concern to come in contact with Zika. The virus has proven that it will cause their baby to be born with birth defects or microcephaly. Currently, CDC is testing the possible link between Zika and nerve cell damage for seniors.
CDC provides the following tips to help your patients stay protected from mosquitoes:
• Eliminate standing water in and around your home
• Fix your septic tank as needed
• Take steps to keep mosquitoes out of your home
• Make sure you’re properly using insect repellant
• Wear long-sleeve shirts and trousers
