The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued the proposed rule: Advancing Care Coordination Through Episode Payment Models (EPMs); Cardiac Rehabilitation Incentive Payment Model; and Changes to the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement Model (CJR) on August 2, 2016.
The rule outlines the following:
• The structure for a bundled payment project for acute myocardial infarctions (AMI)
• Coronary artery bypass graphs (CABG)
• Addition of the surgical hip/femur fracture treatments (SHFFT) to the CJR bundled initiative
Overall, NAHC supports the following innovations in Medicare:
• Efforts to improve access to care
• Enhance the quality of health care services and patient care outcomes
• Institute efficiencies in Medicare spending
However, NAHC recommends CMS to delay the implementation of the new EPMs. NAHC feels that CMS needs to wait and evaluate the impact of the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) model. NAHC feels that once CMS has received sufficient data from the CJR model, then they can make a decision on whether or not to implement additional bundled payment models. From there, CMS will be more informed on how to plan for the future of EPMs.
