For an additional three months, CMS is delaying the implementation of the new cardiac and orthopedic care models, as well as changes to the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) model, according to an interim final rule published March 21.
The models were initially supposed to roll out July 1, however it will now begin October 1.
“This additional three-month delay is necessary to allow time for additional review, to ensure that the agency has adequate time to undertake notice and comment rulemaking to modify the policy if modifications are warranted,” says the rule.
CMS is looking for comments on the potential of “a longer delay” on these models to January 1, 2018.
HHS Secretary Tom Price has a long standing disapproval to episodic payment models, especially if they’re voluntary. For example, CMS’ bundled payment model for hip and knee replacement program.
