The United States Department of Veterans Affairs settled a lawsuit on June 15th with Michael Williamson, a disabled veteran from Springfield, Oregon, who sued the federal agency earlier this year after he was told his home health care would soon end due to a lack of caregivers.
Mr. Williamson, who suffers from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), was told that his home health care was going to end after 17 years because the VA could not find enough workers to cover his needs. They told him he was going to have to go to a nursing home out of state. He served 14 years in the United States Air Force and was diagnosed with ALS 18 years ago. He is on a feeding tube and a ventilator, but his mental acuity has not lost a beat.
“I’m pleased we were able to achieve a successful outcome that honored our veteran and his family’s wishes while also providing a safe environment for his care,” David Whitmer, the Roseburg VA’s interim director, told the Associated Press. “Because of the complex care needed by an ALS patient, this took some time to negotiate and ensure a home-based solution that could meet all of the requirements.”
