CMS Updates Hospice Benefit Policy Chapter to Reflect Policy Changes

Last week CMS issued a Change Request titled “Manual Updates Related to Payment Policy Changes Affecting the Hospice Aggregate Cap Calculation and the Designation of Hospice Attending Physicians.” This manual update reflects policy revisions that have occurred through legislative or regulatory revisions over the last few years relating to:

  • Exception to the Notice of Election (NOE) timely filing requirement in cases of patient retroactive entitlement to Medicare
  • Use of physician assistants (PAs) as hospice attending physicians
  • Updates to the Cap amount, periods for counting beneficiaries for calculation of the hospice Cap, and the Cap year
