Where Home Health Aides are Most and Least Affordable

According to a new report from Senior Living, the cost of a home health aide varies widely with the Pacific Northwest being the most expensive and least expensive in the Mid-Atlantic.

Home health care has been growing exponentially, from $57 million in the 1960s to a projected $109 billion dollars this year.  It is an affordable option of care and the preferred choice for most patients.

To calculate the cost of a home health aide around the country, Senior Living used Genworth’s Cost of Care and assumed 44 hours of work per week. To calculate income, Senior Living used median income figures in the U.S. Census Bureau.

“According to the study, 44 hours of a home health care aide per week would cost an average of about $50,000 per year, equal to 91.1 percent of the average household’s income. That compares very favorably to all other forms of care, including a private room in a nursing home, which costs over $100,000 per year, close to 200 percent of the average household income.

The state where home health aides are most affordable is Maryland, where 44 hours per week for a year would consume only 64.5 percent of an average household’s income. West Virginia, Washington, D.C., Connecticut, and New Jersey – all in the Mid-Atlantic to Northeast – round out the top five most affordable states for home health aides.”

On average, home health aides earn $24,000 per year, the highest paid aides are in Sioux City, IA where they earn an average of $45,400.
