While death is an inevitable part of life, people tend to avoid talking about their thoughts on how they want to die and what their thoughts are on care once the end is near. Hospice providers are always seeking new ways to engage patients in these conversations earlier in their illness rather than later.
One such strategy is a death café, which is a discussion group that allows patients to discuss their thoughts and gather ideas on how they want their end-of-life care to go. These groups are free, usually taking place in a local coffee shop or senior communities with the meeting being led by volunteers who have a close connection to the subject. There is no one selling a service and there is no cost to attend. The discussions center around advance care planning, physician-assisted dying, funeral arrangements, and what happens after death. The leaders meander the room observing conversations to help anyone who might need additional assistance beyond the group and tell them where they can find help.
