In a January 8, 2021 announcement, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) caught home health agencies off guard on their intent to expand Home Health Value Base Purchasing (HHVBP). Value-based programs like HHVBP support the goals of better care of individuals, better health for population and lower cost.
CMS has previously signaled that they were leaning towards not expanding the current five year, nine state pilot which is scheduled to end this calendar year. But one study sponsored by Amedisys indicated that a national expansion of HHVBP model could create $6.3B in savings.
“This Model is a great example of how the Innovation Center can design successful models that both improve quality for Medicare beneficiaries and lower costs,” said CMS Innovation Center Director Brad Smith. “Over the past year, we have taken a data-driven approach to assessing all the Innovation Center’s models, and we are excited that HHVBP has met our gold standard for expansion as laid out by Congress.”
