According to a recent study conducted by VITAS Healthcare of 1,000 respondents, almost 70% reported that discussing their end of like wishes was important to the but only 56% have shared their wishes.
“The COVID-19 pandemic vividly illustrated that anyone’s health can turn on a dime, so part of caring for your family is ensuring that they know your wishes and values,” sources from VITAS told Hospice News. “One of the keys to getting people more comfortable talking about advance care planning is discussing it as part of routine care and revisiting the conversation on an ongoing basis.”
Lack of awareness is the leading barrier to advance care planning conversations, as 22% reported that they did not know how to document their end-of-life care goals. VITAS reports that 99% of physicians believe that these conversations are important, but only 29% state they have received formal training in end-of-life care conversations.
