Arizona Medicaid Joins Insurers to Fight Caregiver Crisis

Posted on Monday, February 10, 2020 1:44 PM

According to a report from the Arizona Daily Star, the state’s Medicaid program is teaming up with three health care insurers to help resolve the state’s caregiver crisis.

The new program which unites Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) with United Healthcare Community Plan, Southwest Catholic Health Network Corp., and Banner-University Family Care, is aiming to make sure that Arizona can meet the needed number of caregivers by 2024

The united team will support initiatives of technical education programs in high school to prepare graduates to become part of the long-term-care workforce. They will also support legislation to assist with training and testing direct care workers to lower costs associated with training and hiring.

Southwest Catholic Health Network Corp. has pledged $2 million to recruit, train, hire and retain between 6,000 to 10,000 new direct-care workers, who would deliver services to clients of the Arizona Long Term Care System, by 2022.

Southwest Catholic Health Network Corp. estimates there are about 1.5 million Arizonans 60 and older, with many of them currently being supported by informal caregivers.

Eight point two million jobs need to be filled by 2028, 6.9 million will be the result of vacancies as existing workers retire or change careers, and 1.3 million jobs will need to be added to meet growing demand for direct care.
