Three months ago, the Patient-Driven Payment Model (PDPM) began for skilled nursing facilities. The PDPM makes the resident condition the primary driver of Medicare reimbursement whereas previously they were paid on the level of therapy provided. As a result of this change, SNFs may not be paying enough attention to what is going on in home health with PDGM.
“That sort of blinders-on way of looking at the post-acute care continuum is dangerous, because the regulators and the payers are not looking at it that way,” Bill Goulding with Aegis Therapies told Skilled Nursing News. “They’re clearly moving towards a setting-agnostic payment system. And the patients don’t experience it that way either. It is part of the continuum.”
According to Aegis Therapies, if home health agencies should go under, SNFs may face some difficult occupancy numbers.
