California Paramedics Making Home Visits

Posted on Sunday, March 10, 2019 8:52 PM

California has introduced a bill that would expand paramedic services under health care worker supervision.  It would allow firefighter paramedics to perform services such as home cave visits, tuberculous therapy and transportation to mental health or sober centers instead of just ER visits.  Many doctors’ and nurses’ group oppose this legislation stating that paramedics are trained in pre-hospital care and do not have the necessary training to perform these new duties.

State and Federal governments have been struggling to keep up with rising health care cost for years, mainly due to the number of Baby Boomers entering retirement.  Home health is increasingly seen as a high-quality and cost-effective way to deliver needed care while avoiding costly hospital visits and readmissions, as well as expensive nursing homes.

Allowing fire-fighter paramedics to perform certain medical procedures in the home is viewed as an extension of this increasing reliance on home health care, which has grown rapidly in the in the past few years and will continue to grow in the years to come.
