Case-Mix Points Data Expose Areas Where OASIS Training Is Needed

Data was recently pulled from the 2015 PPS final rule case-mix points to determine the impact of the clinical and functional case-mix points shakeup. This will allow agency managers to decide where to focus their OASIS education.

According to an analysis from Seattle-based OCS HomeCare, now a part of the ABILITY Network, the average number of functional case-mix points per episode increased to 13.36 in 2015 from 7.26 for 2014.

Agencies are providing more therapy than ever before, however, the industry needs to prepare for scrutiny from CMS when it comes to agencies’ therapy documentation and denying certain claims, according to Trish Twombly, senior director at DecisionHealth in Gaithersburg, Md.

The final results were examined by OCS, which captured about 5.5 million assessments from more than 2,000 provider locations nationwide.

The data also included tips on how to complete M1860 more accurately:
• Train nurses to understand what a term like “safety” means
• Be certain your wheelchair-bound patient can be 100% independent in the use of a wheelchair
• Compare EMR vendors
