This summer marks the 50th anniversary of the enactment of Amendments to the Social Security Act that established the Medicare and Medicaid programs. To celebrate the anniversary, CMS will recognize the impact of the two programs over the next 50 days by sharing facts and posts on social media, and by highlighting people, places, and progress that represent the programs. President Johnson signed legislation to establish Medicare for the elderly and Medicaid for low-income adults, children, pregnant women, and people with disabilities on July 30, 1965. Medicare and Medicaid started as basic health coverage programs for Americans but have since evolved to provide more Americans with improved access to quality and affordable health care coverage. Medicare and Medicaid have transformed the delivery of healthcare in the United States ever since. CMS will engage in conversation with beneficiaries, providers and health experts to commemorate this anniversary. CMS invites the public to participate in this celebration by sharing stories of how Medicare and Medicaid have made a difference. Stories can be shared here. Click here to read CMS’ press release.
