CMS Outlines Medicaid Resources for Zika Virus

On June 1, 2016, an “Informational Bulletin” was sent to Medicaid agencies and other interested parties across the nation, regarding available Medicaid resources for the Zika virus.

The “Informational Bulletin” was provided by Vikki Wachino, Director of the Center for Medicaid and CHIP Services. “The purpose of this CMCS Informational Bulletin is to inform Medicaid agencies and interested stakeholders about how Medicaid services and authorities can help states and territories prevent, detect, and respond to the Zika virus, including efforts to prevent the transmission and address health risks to beneficiaries from the Zika virus,” Wachino stated. “We encourage states to use the flexibilities outlined below.”
1. Prevention:
o Mosquito repellents
o Family Planning and Services for Men and Women Who Are of Child Bearing Age or Women Who Are Pregnant
o Family planning counseling
o Contraception

2. Detection:
o The Medicaid program offers a wide array of services that states can cover to assist with diagnosing the Zika virus

3. Treatment
o Targeted Case Management Services
o Physical Therapy and Related Services
o Prescribed Drugs
o Long-Term Services and Supports

4. Additional Benefit Options and Relevant Authorities
o Additional services provided by managed care plans
o Extended Medicaid Services for Pregnant Women
o Waivers and Demonstrations
