CMS sent out an update on the new Medicare cards that were sent out to all beneficiaries in the past year. These new cards have a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) instead of the beneficiary’s social security number.
There still seems to be some confusion for providers with these new cards so here is a short refresher:
About the MBI:
- MBIs are random and use numbers 0-9 and uppercase letters, except for S, L, O, I, B, and Z. CMS excludes these letters to avoid confusion when differentiating between these letters and numbers (e.g., between “0” and “O”). Medicare patients should have destroyed their old cards. If they discarded their new card, they should contact 1-800-MEDICARE to request a replacement.
