A new study found that educating oncology nurses on how to have end of life conversations with advanced cancer patients allows them to make more informed choices.
The study indicates that patients who are well informed about their prognosis make better decisions, yet, about half of the patients in the study had not had an end of life conversation with their provider. The providers are hesitant to hold these conversations for fear that it could cause feelings of hopelessness in the patients.
According to the study results, evidence suggests that increased understanding of prognosis positively influences patients’ EOL decisions. Patients who did not grasp the severity of their prognosis overestimated life expectancy and were 2.6 times more likely to choose life-extending treatments.
