In a survey conducted by Hospice News, 26% of hospice leaders said that staffing is the greatest challenge hospice providers would face in 2020. To this end, hospices nationwide are fine tuning their on-boarding process to include more training and orientation to help increase staff retention.
“Hospices are already struggling to fill their ranks. The United States has 13.35 hospice and palliative care specialists for every 100,000 adults 65 and older, according to an April 2018 study. The research estimated that by 2040 the patient population will need 10,640 to 24,000 specialists; supply is expected to range between 8,100 and 19,000.
Turnover rates for hospice providers reach as high as 18.7% for nurses and nearly 24% for hospice aides. The average cost of nurse turnover falls between $37,700 to $58,400.”
Investing in employees, teaching them about your company’s mission and vision helps them to feel included and part of a team. An employee that feels included in your mission is much more likely to stay with the company that one who is not.
