According to a recent report from The Harvard Business Review (HBR), there are some surprising barriers to implementing a home-based care programs, one of which is patient’s preference.
The report from HBR shows that 54% of seniors prefer treatment for acute illness to be completed in the hospital instead of their home. This is surprising, however, treatment in the home can lead to a feeling of invasion of privacy and/or serve as a reminder of patients’ conditions, according to HBR. Also, patients are unaware of that it’s possible to have state of the art complex care at home.
Another barrier home-based care programs focus and are structured around addressing social determinants of health, and this strategy isn’t widely rewarded under traditional fee-for-service models.
“Physicians spend more time understanding and addressing the social and economic conditions that impact health — such as remedying medication discrepancies, identifying home safety issues, and connecting patients with social services — but are disadvantaged under traditional fee-for-service models that tie payment to number of patients seen and procedures performed,” HBR authors wrote in their report.
