After much anticipation, the FY 2022 ICD-10-CM code files have been released. There are 159 additions, 32 deletions and 20 revisions to the code set. These changes are less than last year’s 273 additions and FY 2019’s 279 additions and 143 revisions. There are multiple changes to Excludes 1 and 2 rules which coders will need to pay attention to. This code set is to be used for inpatient discharges occurring from October 1, 2021, through September 30, 2022, and outpatient encounters occurring from October 1, 2021, through September 30, 2022.
The FY 2022 ICD-10-CM Coding guidelines have not been posted yet. As a reminder, the General Equivalence Mappings (GEMS) files are no longer being published and should no longer be utilized.
