Earlier this month, Chest, the official publication for the American College of Chest Physicians published a study that was conducted by Intermountain Healthcare in Utah. The study showed that patients who have low risk blood clots could be treated at home just as safely and effectively if not more so than in a hospital.
Researchers tracked 200 patients treated for serious lung blood clots or acute pulmonary embolisms from 2013 to 2016. All the patients, who were determined to have a low risk of developing a serious complication from blood clots, were treated on an outpatient basis instead of being admitted to hospital.
They tracked the patients for 90 days, at the end of that time only one patient required hospitalization. But more importantly, the patients were more satisfied being cared for at home.
“We found a large subset of patients with blood clots who’d do well at home – in fact who probably did better at home,” said Joseph Bledsoe, MD, research director in emergency medicine at Intermountain Medical Center. “When patients are sent home versus staying in the hospital, they’re at lower risk of getting another infection. It’s a lot less expensive, too.”
“Our findings show that if you appropriately risk stratify patients, there are a lot of people with blood clots who are safe to go home,” said Dr. Bledsoe.
