Home Helpers CEO: Labor-Starved Providers Must ‘Hunt’ not ‘Fish’ for Caregivers

In January, total non-farm payroll employment rose by 225,000 according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The unemployment rate was little changed at 3.6%, with notable job gains happening in construction, health care, transportation and warehousing.  This is creating a very tight job market overall, especially for agencies looking for caregivers.

“We are in a full-employment economy,” Emma Dickison, CEO of Home Helpers Home Care, told Home Health Care News during an in-person interview last month. “I saw another statistic about a month or two ago that said we are officially at a place where there are more jobs open than there are individuals looking to be employed. That’s a really scary place to be if you’re a busy owner or a corporation that relies heavily on any type of employment, particularly caregivers.”

Home Helpers Home Care is utilizing a few new tactics to recruit and retain caregivers.  Firstly, once contacted by a prospective caregiver they get back to them as quickly as possible and if warranted schedule an interview and promise a cession about hiring within 72 hours.  Once hired, the new employee is paired with a seasoned caregiver for their first day to ensure a smooth transition.  Also, they offer many opportunities for their caregivers to upskill.
