Hospices Contend with Medication Shortages Amid Pandemic

Pharmacies, like most areas of healthcare are struggling to keep up with demand during this pandemic. As a result, hospices are having a hard time gaining access to much needed medication for their patients.

“The pandemic did not make these [shortages] any better to deal with,” said Jason Kimbrel, MyNHPCO pharmacist community leader for the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO). “It actually made them a little bit worse. So, hospices that are either looking for some type of an infusion or maybe in a setting where they might have an inpatient unit could be facing struggles with finding some of these medications that are injectable, although not typically used in hospice-centric medications.”

In hospice, they need a lot of liquid formations of medicines. Hospices are finding that their pharmacies are unable to get these from their suppliers in a timely fashion now, putting strain on hospices.
