Identifying Areas for Performance Improvement with QAPI

Posted on Thursday, September 15, 2016 1:32 PM

Agencies must direct their focus on a Quality Assessment Performance Improvement (QAPI) program. This will provide your organization with success in preparing for CMS’ proposed Conditions of Participation (CoPs).

Additionally, maintaining a QAPI program is one of the four major new categories in CMS’ proposed CoPs, released in October 2014. Therefore, each agency needs to have a QAPI program in place to position your agency for compliance.

Agencies can direct their focus on developing a comprehensive quality program through:
• Utilization review committees
• Department of health certification surveys
• CMS CASPER reports. The reports can identify process and outcome issues
• Staff and patient complaints
• Root cause analysis of a near miss or a poor outcome

Three steps to set up a sound program
1. Assess your risks
2. Create a written plan
3. Report your results
